EXPERIENCE IS THE REASON TO ELECT JENNIFER TANG-ANDERSON FOR 86th DISTRICT COURT.
I have 12 years of experience with criminal matters in District Court and the majority of a district judge’s time is spent on criminal matters. During that time, I have conducted over 100 criminal jury trials and have handled thousands of criminal cases involving drunk driving, drug offenses, theft, assault, and financial crimes. I am known in the legal community for handling my cases fairly and with honesty, integrity and determination.
In 2001, I helped develop the 86th District Sobriety Court – the first therapeutic justice court in the District. In 2003, I also helped develop the Juvenile Drug Court – the first therapeutic justice court in the 13th Circuit. Therapeutic justice addresses the underlying reasons for criminal behavior and seeks to prescribe an appropriate punishment and rehabilitation program aimed at reducing the chances of repeated criminal behaviors. Research has demonstrated a significant decrease in the recidivism rate when therapeutic justice is employed. Since the inception of these courts, I have been the assistant prosecutor handling all of these cases and in doing so, have demonstrated my commitment to therapeutic justice. As a judge, I will continue my dedication to this proven method of success in the Mental Health Court – also a therapeutic justice court – thereby improving the quality of life in our community.
When I am not in court, I enjoy being outdoors with my husband Matt, my daughter Macy and my dog Emily. In 1999 I was a charter member of the Sunrise Rotary Club in Traverse City and have since served as President, Director, Community Service Chair, Raffle Chair, and Sunrise Rotary Mile Event Chair. I have also been a volunteer in various community organizations including the United Way, March of Dimes and VASA Trail.
I serve the community from the courtroom and streets with fairness and integrity, and have a deep commitment to positively impacting the lives of people I encounter. From the bench, I will bring these same values and dedication to my work, ensuring a high quality of justice in the 86th District.
