LEVY-TATUM WINS DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY FOR JUDGE

May 16th, 2007

Jennifer W. Levy-Tatum, Esquire, a lifelong Democrat, handily won the Democratic Party Nomination for Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Chester County in the Primary Elections held May 15, 2007.  She received 78% of  Democratic votes and 41% of Republican votes, ending up with a total of 3,000 votes more than her Republican opponent.   The two candidates will face off in the November elections.  Ms. Levy-Tatum is the daughter of Wesley and Sylvia Levy of Free Hill, St. Mary.  She is a graduate of St. Andrew High School and UWI, Mona.  She was Jamaica Scholar in 1973.

“I take the law very seriously” says Levy-Tatum, who graduated from Widener University School of Law in 1997.  “I am running for Judge because I believe I have been called to do so, and because I believe that the Court of Common Pleas of Chester County should reflect the new diversity of our community,” said Levy-Tatum, in a recent interview.  “I believe I would introduce a welcome balance to the perspective of the Court.  I have been intrigued with the idea of being a judge since participating on the Moot Court in law school.”

“I believe that my diverse life experiences as well as my legal background will stand me in good stead on the bench.  I am a black woman, an immigrant, and I have strong ties to the Hispanic Community. I have tried cases and/or appeared before Zoning Boards in numerous jurisdictions.  I am known as a pragmatic, resourceful woman, with an ability to see through the smoke and cut to the chase.  Those are the qualities which I will bring to the bench, in addition to the ability to sift through complex facts, analyze the law logically and apply the law to the facts to arrive at a sound and just decision.”

Levy-Tatum has demonstrated her commitment to the legal community through her involvement as a frequent judge of Moot Court competitions at Widener University Law School.  She is on the Zoning Hearing Board of her township, and acts as an arbitrator in the Court of Common Pleas.

In her professional life, Levy-Tatum runs her own law practice in West Chester and is an adjunct professor at Eastern University.  She is principal of Levy-Tatum & Associates, P.C., a law firm which she founded in 1999, which concentrates its practice in real estate and probate matters.

As an involved member of her community, she serves as Secretary of the Board of Directors of Barclay Friends Retirement Community in West Chester, Treasurer of the River Village II Homeowners’ Association at Shawnee on Delaware, Notary Public of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and member of the Dean's Council on Minority Affairs at Widener University School of Law.   Before deciding to run for judge, Levy-Tatum was a Democratic Party committee person for West Bradford Township Precinct Two.  She believes that her multi-cultural background coupled with my proven academic ability and my experience as an educator, a litigator with a multi-county practice, an arbitrator and a zoning board member, will be invaluable on the bench.

arrive at a sound and just decision.”

her involvement as a frequent judge of Moot Court competitions at Widener

our County and Commonwealth.
